Steps To Apply for SASSA R370 Grant
The R370 Social Relief of Distress Grant is a monthly payment given by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) to help people who need financial support. If you’re confused about how to apply, let me tell you how I apply for SASSA R370 using different methods.
The Social Assistance Act of 2004 is now taking care of this relief grant program. Applications for the SASSA COVID-19 R370 grant are open this month.
Create a SASSA account
To get started, you’ll need to make a new account on the SASSA website.
- Open your browser and go to: https://services.sassa.gov.za/
- Click on the “Register” button
- Accept the agreement by clicking “I Agree”
- Choose your citizenship type (South African, Refugee, or Permanent Resident)
- Select your ID type (ID card or temporary ID)
- Type in your ID number
- Choose your title (Mr., Mrs., or Miss)
- Type in your name
- Enter your email address
- Create a password
- Add your cellphone number
- Click “Save” to move ahead
- Enter the OTP sent to your phone to confirm your registration
Pick your application method
You can apply for the R370 grant using one of the following methods:
Apply online
- Go to https://srd.sassa.gov.za/said
- Click on “How do I apply for this grant”
- Then click “Click here to apply online”
- Put in your registered phone number and choose the grant
- You will see the application form – fill in all the fields using your ID details
- Read and accept the terms and conditions to go forward
Apply through WhatsApp
- Save this number: 082 046 8553
- Send a message to that number
- Share your personal info when asked
- You’ll get an OTP and a link to the SRD website
- Click the link, add the OTP, and click verify
- Enter your ID number and surname
- Check and confirm your details
- Agree to the terms and continue
Apply through GovChat
Step 1: Download the GovChat app from Google Play Store or Apple Store
Step 2: Register using your cellphone number

Step 4: Tap on “GovChat login”

Apply using SASSA Chatbot
- Go to the official SASSA website
- Open the chatbot for help with SRD R370 grant
- Enter your ID and mobile number
- Click the option “I want to apply for an SRD R370 grant”
- The chatbot will give you a link
- Go to that link and accept the terms and conditions
Apply in person
- Visit a nearby SASSA office
- Ask for a grant application form
- Fill it out carefully
- Attach needed documents to confirm you qualify
- Submit the form and get a receipt
Accept the terms and conditions
Before you go further, make sure to read and agree to the documents like Declaration and Consent, and the one about Special COVID-19 SRD Grant.

Next, you will be asked for more details to check your eligibility.
- Type in your email address
- Choose your gender
- Pick your highest education level
- Share your work status
- If you have no disability, select No; if yes, select Yes
- Write your full address
- Add your cellphone number to get updates from SASSA
- Check everything again and then hit Submit
- You’ll receive an Application ID
Download affidavit
SASSA will now create an affidavit based on your details. You must be honest when answering. Wrong information can delay your grant. You can download the affidavit and the bank payment form from their website.
Select your payment option
Whether this is your first time or not, the next steps are different for each case.
If you’re a new applicant
You must choose between two payment ways:
If you choose Cash Send:
- Provide a cellphone number
- Agree to the terms
- Click submit
If you prefer a bank account:
- Write bank name
- Add your account number
- Mention the branch name
- Select account type
- Agree to terms and submit
- Make sure the account is under your own name, or you won’t get the money
If you already applied before
If you picked bank account last time:
Check your current bank info

If you were using Cash Send but now want bank deposit:
Write your bank name

Get a confirmation
Once you finish this step, you’ll get a confirmation SMS telling you your banking details are active for the R370 grant.
How SASSA checks your info
SASSA will now check your details one by one:
- They check your ID number and name with Home Affairs
- Check other info with databases like SARS, UIF, and NSFAS
- Confirm your phone and ID details
- After checking everything, your payments will start from the date you applied
Keep these things ready
Before you apply, make sure you have:
- South African ID or Refugee permit
- Your full name, date of birth, and gender
- Email address
- Proof of home address (bill or letter)
- Bank statement showing income
- Either bank details or cellphone number for payment
Who can get the R370 grant?
You can apply if you meet the following:
- Citizenship
You must be South African, a refugee, or have permanent residency - Age
You must be between 18 and 59 years old - Income
You must not earn more than R624 per month
You must not have any other income source - Other grants
You must not be getting other social grants like:- Disability Grant
- Old Age Pension
- Child Grant (if applying for yourself)
- UIF support
You must not be receiving UIF payments
Want to update your SASSA info?
- Go to SASSA site and click “Update Application”
- Enter your ID and mobile number – you’ll get an OTP
- Use that OTP to log in
- Change what you need – like contact or bank details
- Check everything and submit

What if I don’t have a bank account?
