Steps to Apply for SASSA Disability Grant

Steps to Apply for SASSA Disability Grant

You can apply for a disability grant if you have a health condition—either physical or mental—that stops you from working for more than six months. If your condition will last longer, you may get a permanent disability grant. If it’s expected to last for at least six months but less than a year, you might qualify for a temporary disability grant.

How to Apply for SASSA Disability Grant

  1. Start with a Medical Check:
You’ll need to be checked by a doctor who is approved by SASSA. The doctor will look at your health condition to see if it fits the rules for getting a disability grant. Based on your situation, they will also decide if you need a short-term or long-term grant.
  2. Doctor’s Report:
The doctor will write a report after checking your condition. SASSA will use this report to help decide if you can get the grant. They also look at things like how much money you have and whether you can take care of yourself. Once the medical check is done, you’ll go to the nearest SASSA office to fill out an application form for the grant. Be sure to take all needed papers with you.
  3. Family or Friends Can Help Apply:
If your disability makes it hard for you to go to the office, a trusted person like a family member or friend can apply on your behalf.

Prepare the Required Documents

Complete your application at the SASSA office near you. If you need help, the staff will guide you through the form.

If you don’t have an ID, you can still apply:

You’ll need to fill out an official affidavit form in front of a Commissioner of Oaths (not linked to SASSA). SASSA will take your fingerprints and then send you to the Department of Home Affairs to apply for an ID. If you don’t get your ID, your grant might be stopped.

You will need the following documents:

  • Doctor’s report and disability assessment form. PDF for Medical Assessments
  • Proof of marital status (if it applies)
  • Proof of where you live
  • Income statements or dividend slips
  • Proof of any property or savings
  • Bank statements from the last 3 months
  • Refugee permit and 13-digit refugee ID (if you are a refugee)

Submitting the Application

After submitting your documents and doing an interview, you’ll get a letter from SASSA confirming that they got your application. SASSA may later ask for more info depending on your case.
